Project Title: Community Violence Reduction (CVR) through Youth Empowerment

Project Duration: August 1, 2022 - October 25, 2022

Location: Tambura County, Western Equatoria State (WES), South Sudan

Funding Partner: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS)

Background and Objectives:  To cultivate a more peaceful and prosperous Tambura County, the Star Trust Organization (STO), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), launched the Community Violence Reduction (CVR) through Youth Empowerment project. Running from August to October 2022, this initiative aimed to promote peace and cultural co-existence among communities in Tambura by enhancing the livelihoods and incomes of local youths.

Recognising the crucial role of young people in fostering community stability, the project centred on empowering up to 354 youths. It sought to equip them with the necessary skills and resources to become active change agents in their communities.

Key Components and Achievements:

  1.     Skills Training: Youths received comprehensive training in various technical and vocational areas, aimed at building their capacity to contribute positively to their communities.
  2.     Focus Areas: The project targeted three key sectors: Food production and processing Motorcycle repair and maintenance, Solar PV (Photovoltaic) repair and installation enterprises
  3.     Entrepreneurship and Business Management: Alongside technical skills, participants were trained in entrepreneurship and business management to prepare them for the challenges of running small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
  4.     Business Development Support: The project provided ongoing support to ensure the sustainability and success of the youths’ business ventures.

 

Impact and Outlook:

The CVR, through the Youth Empowerment project, has played a vital role in reducing community violence and promoting peace in Tambura County. By focusing on economic empowerment and skill development among youths, the initiative has not only enhanced individual livelihoods but also contributed to the overall stability and growth of the community. The success of this project demonstrates the potential of youth-led initiatives in peacebuilding and community development.
