Project Overview and Objective:
The SAMS project aims to enhance food security for smallholder farmers, and enhance market opportunities, fostering improved livelihoods, resilience, and sustainable food systems in Maridi, Ibba, Yambio, Nzara, Ezo, and Tambura Counties of Western Equatoria State (WES). With specific objectives to:
Key Components:
Increased Crop Production and Productivity: Provide modern agriculture practices training to smallholder farmers (SHFs) and farmer organizations (FOs), and facilitate access to improved technologies for enhanced agriculture production.
Improved Post-Harvest Handling: Offer training and coaching in post-harvest management practices, promote and provide improved post-harvest equipment and technologies.
Enhanced Market Access: Managing rural aggregation centres/networks as selling points for farmers’ produce and facilitating linkages of smallholder farmers and Farmer organisations to markets and business opportunities.
Access to Market Infrastructure Improved: Through the Provision of business development support services and establishing and strengthening Village Savings and Loans (VSL) schemes.
Enhanced National and Sub-national Institutional Capacity: Supporting stakeholders’ coordination on Food and Nutrition Security and livelihood issues.
Extension Services Improvement: Improving the capacity of individuals to promote extension services, contributing to knowledge of and agricultural technological transfers to improve access, availability, and utilisation.
This project aims to empower smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, by equipping them with the necessary skills, resources, and market access to enhance their agricultural productivity, post-harvest management, and market engagement, ultimately leading to improved food security and sustainable livelihoods.
