Social and Economic Empowerment of Women (SEEW)

Background and Objectives: The Social and Economic Empowerment of Women (SEEW) project, a collaborative effort by the Star Trust Organization (STO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has been a transformative initiative in Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. Since September 2021, the project has focused on empowering women in five counties: Yambio, Maridi, Mundri West, Mundri East, and Mvolo, by equipping them with crucial skills and resources for economic independence.

The SEEW project aimed to uplift 350 women, organized in 15 groups, by enhancing their livelihoods through skill development in various agricultural value chains. The initiative focused on comprehensive training that included technical, vocational, and livelihood skills, coupled with business and entrepreneurship management education.

Key Components and Achievements:

1. Skill Development and Training: Participants underwent intensive training, culminating in their graduation in December 2021. This training was designed to enhance their technical and entrepreneurial competencies in agriculture-related activities.
2. Provision of Start-Up Kits: Following their training, the women received start-up kits to initiate their business ventures, bridging the gap between skill acquisition and practical application.
3. Infrastructure Support: The project expanded its scope to include the installation of two significant agro-machinery assets: a grinding mill in Mundri West and a honey processing unit in Yambio. These installations have directly benefited additional women groups and the broader community.
4. Market and Financial Linkages: A crucial aspect of the project was establishing linkages to markets and credit/grant facilities, thereby ensuring the sustainability and growth of the women’s enterprises.

5. Extended Project Timeline: Initially slated to end in December 2021, the project was extended until June 30, 2022, to maximize its impact and reach.
