Project Location: Maridi County, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan

Target Beneficiaries: 5,075 smallholder farmers

Funding Partner: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

Project Objectives:

The RALP aims to equip farmers and their cooperatives with essential knowledge, skills, quality inputs, and technology to enhance productivity and production. Through the adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and nutrition-sensitive agriculture, improved post-harvest handling, aggregation capacities, agro-processing, and value addition, the project seeks to enhance adaptive capacity to climate risks. Ultimately, the project aims to strengthen farmer capacity, improve household food production, and enhance natural resource management for improved food and nutrition security in Maridi County, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan.

Key Components:

  • Formation and capacity strengthening of Farmer Organizations (FOs), with 52 farmer groups supported in developing by-laws and engaging in Village Savings and Lending Associations (VSLAs), as well as initiatives to prevent Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) within the community.
  • Enhancement of agricultural knowledge and skills among smallholder farmers, focusing on good agricultural practices, climate-smart agriculture, post-harvest management, and pest management across specific enterprises.
  • Support for farm households with agricultural production inputs, including seeds, tools, and small ruminants, to improve home consumption and livelihoods.
  • Support for seed production, including the establishment of seed quality control boards, support to seed producers, provision of production and processing inputs, and market linkages.
  • Promotion of tree planting and agroforestry, including training and provision of inputs to households and the establishment of demonstration units.
  • Support for crop production and value addition for market, including training, establishment of demonstration units, and provision of value addition equipment.
  • Support for vegetable production for market, including training, establishment of demonstration units, and market linkages.
  • Enhanced access to technologies and agricultural mechanization, including provision of mechanization equipment, training, and linkage with input markets.
  • Implementation of the Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), including designation of safeguard focal points, community engagement, and participation in environmental and social impact assessments

Impact and Outlook:

Until now, the project has significantly diversified the livelihoods of 495 smallholder farmers by providing them with small ruminants, strengthening cooperative groups, conducting training sessions on agroforestry, and distributing seedlings within the community. Through these interventions, the project has aimed to enhance farmers' resilience to climate risks, improve agricultural productivity, and promote sustainable natural resource management practices. By empowering farmers with the necessary resources, skills, and knowledge, the project seeks to create lasting positive impacts on the livelihoods and well-being of smallholder farmers in the target area
