Project Title: Food and Nutrition Security for Resilience Programme

Project Duration: May 2019 – December 2022

Location: Yambio and Nzara Counties, Western Equatoria State (WES), South Sudan

Beneficiaries target: 3800

Supporting Partner: Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO)

Donor: Kingdom of Netherlands

Project Overview:

Star Trust Organization (STO) successfully implemented the Food and Nutrition Security for Resilience Pro (FNS-Repro) in two phases, reaching a total of 3800 beneficiaries. The primary objective was to contribute to resilient livelihoods, food systems, and sustainable localized peace for the youth and women in South Sudan.

Key Achievements:

Improved Inclusive Access to Natural Resources:

  • Formation and capacity enhancement of Natural Resource Management and Accountability for the Affected Population (AAPs).
  • Promotion of vegetable block farms for the propagation of vegetable seeds.

Enhanced Livelihood and Income Opportunities:

  • Assistance to 1,500 farmers in seed production through seed fairs, monitoring, and tool distribution.
  • Organization of farmers into enterprise groups with various technical support services.
  • Effective awareness creation through radio talk shows and training sessions, leading to enhanced local seed production, promotion of improved crop varieties, and the establishment of collective seed storage and marketing facilities.

Knowledge and Capacity Building:

  • Enhanced knowledge, skills, and capacity of local communities in nutrition-sensitive livelihoods.

Promotion of Nutrient-Dense Crops:

  • Promotion and utilization of nutrient-dense crops of local and modern origin (e.g., Finger millet, Soya beans, and Sweet Potatoes) to strengthen the nutrition habits of communities.

Impact and Outlook:

The FNS-Repro project has played a pivotal role in fostering resilient livelihoods, enhancing food systems, and advancing sustainable peace across targeted regions in South Sudan. By fostering inclusive access to natural resources, creating improved livelihood opportunities, and implementing nutrition-focused interventions, the project has made a substantial impact. Notably, over 200 metric tons of each of TME-14 and Orange Fleshy Sweet Potatoes have been introduced in Yambio and Nzara. Additionally, a fully operational Seed Quality Control Board has been established in Western Equatoria State, contributing to the development of a formalised seed sector within the state
