Breaking Stereotypes: Empowering Women in Male-Dominated Trades.
Historically, trades like welding, building, and carpentry have been dominated by men, largely due to societal norms and gender biases. However, Star Trust Organisation is actively working to dismantle these barriers by providing young women with the training and opportunities necessary to thrive in these fields. This initiative stands out not only for its broad scope and ambitious goals but also for its focus on gender inclusivity, particularly in traditionally male-dominated fields. Ensuring they have essential skills to foster a more inclusive and diverse workforce.
Sadia Grace Kenyi Welding Pioneer
Sadia Grace, a 24-year-old from Juba, is one of the many women who are benefited from the Skills Empowerment Employment for the Development Youth (SEED4Y) Project. Before joining the program, has been struggling to find stable employment. With months into the training, feels ready and hopes to be certified welder with a job prospect with local construction company.
“The training has given me confidence and skills I never thought I could have. I am hopeful that welding will open doors for me, so I can support my family and inspire other young women to pursue their dreams,” said Sadia.
Achol Amina– Carpentry Trailblazer
Achol Amina , a 23-year-old from Malakal, has also seen her life transformed through the project. Initially hesitant about entering the carpentry field, Amina is on a journey to becoming a well respected carpenter known for her craftsmanship.
“Being part of the SEED4Y Project changed my perspective. I realized that women can excel in any field. The support and training I am receiving is crucial in helping me break into this male-dominated industry,” Amina shares.
The SEED4Y Project provides extensive training programs that cover not only the technical skills required for these trades but also essential soft skills such as communication, leadership, and financial literacy. These programs are designed to ensure that participants are well-rounded professionals ready to take on various challenges in the workplace.
Private Sector Engagement
A key component of the SEED4Y Project is its engagement with the private sector. By fostering partnerships with local businesses and industries, the project ensures that the skills acquired by the youth are aligned with market needs. This collaboration has led to numerous internship and employment opportunities for the trained youth, further integrating them into the economic fabric of their communities.
The SEED4Y Project, is funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and in partnership with UNDP and is implemented by STO, in Western Equatoria State (WES), Central Equatoria State (CES), and Upper Nile State (UNS), collectively targeting 3,300 youths.
